This is a worksheet (and key) that emphasizes the chemistry of water and the emergent properties of water that arise from water's chemistry. Its purpose is to reinforce the lecture material on these topics and to help students start to think about what makes a molecule polar/hydrophilic vs. nonpolar/hydrophobic. It was adapted from a worksheet posted at http://nanosense.sri.com/activities/finefilters/scienceofwater/FF_Lesson2Teacher.pdf

I used this as a recitation with my students in 1113 after they learned about water chemistry and emergent properties in lecture. One of the strengths of this resource is that it shows the relationship between many of the topics we want them to understand such as water and life, chemistry and biology, polarity and hydrophobia/philia etc. I did not notice any problems with the activity itself but would recommend using it on a day when you can give them quite a bit of time, especially if this is new information for your students. My students really seemed to like the worksheet format, but struggled in particular to remember the 4 specific emergent properties of water. I would absolutely use this resource again. It might be interesting in the future to incorporate whiteboards so that they can share their water molecule drawings and so they could draw their examples of the 4 emergent properties.

I used this worksheet at the end of the lecture on the properties of water to get students to immediately apply what they just heard about in lecture and to also help establish some common patterns/themes they will see during the rest of the semester.
