This is a set of questions and slides to facilitate a discussion about the chemistry required for success in Bio 1113. Obviously this will vary with each instructor. The first question models a study strategy that I encourage my students to take: start with a blank page and, starting broadly and then filling in the details, write what you know about x subject. This fits nicely at the beginning of the course, because it covers intro material, and asking lab groups to come up with answers together helps lower the barrier to speaking up in class. The subsequent questions are designed both to get the students interested by presenting relevant examples (what's more relevant to college students than pot brownies and beer?) and demonstrating the types of chemical understanding students should have for biology 1113. I also have some summary slides to help orient students' study and practice toward specific skills, which can help some students feel less overwhelmed. Again, all of this may need to be tweaked based on what chemistry will be covered by the instructors. TAs who implement this material will have the most success if they are comfortable with all these chemical principles. Flexibility is built-in, but it doesn't work well if the TA can't respond to the specific needs of the class. Please feel free to email me (Jon Picking) or observe a veteran if you'd like to see how this can be used! Biology learning outcomes: 1.The Chemistry of Life a. Identify examples and list characteristics and general functions of the major classes of biological macromolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids). Given that chemistry is the foundation for everything, other outcomes are alluded to here just by discussing various biological functions of macromolecules. The hope is that this will facilitate a solid understanding of chemistry that students recall when each of these later topics is covered.
